Kindergarten - Living, Learning and Working Together

Students will learn about different cultures in the United States by comparing family customs and traditions.  Students will recognize that African-Americans celebrate Kwanzaa to celebrate their heritage and culture.

Symbols of our Country (K SS LPQ1 029)
Students will be able to recognize the following symbols of the United States: American flag, White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Pledge of Allegiance.

Where are Things and People Located (K SS LPQ3 059)
Students will be introduced to the Underground Railroad while learning about maps, globes and cardinal directions.

Wants and Needs (K SS LPQ4 087)
Students will differentiate between wants and needs and recognize that people have jobs in order to obtain needs and wants. Students will also be introduced to African-American inventors.

First Grade - Our Community and Beyond

Cultural Diversity (01 SS LPQ2 005)
Students will be able to describe how people of different cultures share their customs and traditions.  Students will also be able to explain how communities and cultures change over time.

Martin Luther KingI Have a Dream (01 SS LPQ3 083)
Students will learn about the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr.  They will understand the impact of his beliefs by reflecting on a section of King's "I Have a Dream" speech.  Students will also become aware of inequities that still exist in the United States.

Parade of Heroes (01 SS LPQ2 040)
Students will compare the similarities and differences among the lives and activities of historical figures who have influenced the community, state, and nation.  They will also identify historic figures who have exhibited a love of inventiveness.

Celebrating Heroes of the Past (01 SS LPQ2 037)
Students will identify contributions of historical figures who have influenced our nation. They will describe ways people honor their heroes.

Second Grade - Who We Are As AmericansRosa Parks

Rosa Parks and Montgomery Bus Boycott (02 SS LPQ2 101)
Students will understand the heroic actions that Rosa Parks took to demand her rights under the United States system of laws.  They will also learn how laws in the United States are made.

Freedom Quilts and escaping slavery (02 SS LPQ2 098)
Describe life on a southern cotton plantation and understand the ways that slaves would have tried to escape for their freedom.  Includes student production of landmark maps and basic directions.

African-American Inventors (02 SS LPQ4 100)
Students will recognize the importance of African-American inventors by investigating and researching information about the goods they invented.

Students will be able to identify contributions of historical figures that have influenced our nation, as well as describe ways people honor these heroes.

Third Grade - The United States Regions and Its Neighbors

African Art, Culture & Symmetry (03 SS LPQ1 097)
MapStudents will be able to identify Africa on a map of the world, as well as identify geographical features of Africa.  Students will also be able to identify characteristics of African artwork, including symmetrical patterns.

Mary McLeod Bethune and Character  (03 SS LPQ2)
After analyzing primary sources, students will be able to recognize and explain the impact of Mary McLeod Bethune on the people and welfare of Florida.  Students will be able to apply historic values and principles to their own lives.

Madame C.J. Walker (03 SS LPQ3)
Students will be able to identify the impact of the first African-American millionaire, Madame C.J. Walker, as they learn about money, working for money, and the importance of goal setting.

Rosa Parks: Fighting for Civil Rights (03 SS LPQ4)
Students will understand how the heroic actions of Rosa Parks, an African American woman, changed history by refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. This helped to end segregation and forever made a social change in America.

Jackie Robinson and the Negro League (03 SS LPQ1 108)
Students will learn the role that Jackie Robinson had in integrating American society and identify the qualities of character that made Jackie Robinson an ideal candidate to be the first African American Major League baseball player as they analyze primary source documents to interpret history.

African American Pioneer Aviators (03 SS LPQ2)
Students will understand the challenges faced by African Americans as they created their own opportunities in the field of aviation.

Fourth Grade - Florida Studies

African Settlement at Fort Mose (04 SS LPQ2 093)
Students will understand the significance of Fort Mose as the first free African community in the United States. The settlement was located north of St. Augustine and the inhabitants comprised the “Men of Menendez”, charged with defending the Spanish settlements during Spanish colonial period.

Seminoles and War (04 SS LPQ2 105)
Students will understand the causes of the Seminole Wars through the eyes of the Seminole Indians, escaped slaves who joined the Seminole, and Osceola.

Florida and the Civil War (04 SS LPQ3 048)
Students will identify differences between the states in the North and the South before the Civil War; explain what life was like before the Civil War for slaves; analyze events that led to the start of the Civil War; summarize Florida’s contribution to the Civil War; analyze living conditions in Florida during the Civil War.

Fort MoseReconstruction (04 SS LPQ3 049)
Students will identify effects of Reconstruction in Florida; explain how sharecropping was sometimes used to economically marginalize former slaves; summarize the process by which Florida rejoined the Union and the failure of Reconstruction in Florida.

Escaping Slavery by Running to Freedom (05 SS LPQ2 096)
Ruby BridgesStudents will learn how the Underground railroad helped many slaves escape to freedom; use maps and biographical resources to describe a series of events.

The First Africans in North America (05 SS LPQ1)
Students will be able to understand that many African people traveled to the new world aboard Spanish and other ships as free laborers. Students will be able to describe the interactions among Native Americans, Africans, English, French, Dutch and Spanish for control of North America.

Triangular Trade & Slavery in the American Colonies (05 SS LPQ1)
The students will recognize the positive and negative effects of voluntary trade among Native Americans, European explorers and colonists. The student will be able to explain the importance of Triangular Trade linking Africa, the West Indies, the British colonies and Europe. The student will describe the introduction, impact and role of slavery in the colonies.

American Revolution-Causes and Effects (05 SS LPQ2)
Students will be able to identify the causes, battles, significant places and people and effects of the American Revolution while recognizing the contributions of African-Americans throughout the American Revolution.

Crispus Attucks & the Boston Massacre (05 SS LPQ2)
Students will understand that even though the Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal" and a black man was the first to be killed in the American Revolution, many African Americans in the United States were excluded from this excerpt of the Declaration of Independence until the Civil War gave more equality to African Americans.

Voting Rights of African Americans (05 SS LPQ3)
Students will be able to explain how the Constitution has expanded voting rights from our nation's early history to today.
