Animal Science and Services

Technological and economic factors have changed the way people around the world perceive the importance of agriculture. Animal Science and Services teaches agricultural sciences, health, safety, environmental issues, animal health, animal grooming, and animal restraint. This includes tools, equipment, and technologies currently used in the field. The curriculum includes livestock management, agricultural science, and more. It is taught through hands-on experiences that prepare students for both entry-level jobs and/or higher-level education.

Areas of Study

  • Hands-on, real-world Agriculture experiences are taught on-site at Fort Pierce Westwood’s agriculture facility which includes steer barn, swine stalls, growing fields, and much more!
  • Students learn about agriculture, food, and natural resources.
  • A wide variety of skills are emphasized with classroom and lab lessons including science, math, communications, leadership, management, and industry-related technologies.
  • Future Farmers of America (FFA) is an active co-curricular student organization whose activities are fully integrated into the program. FFA provides students hands-on experience in leadership, organization, public speaking, directed-studies, and more.
  • Students will have the opportunity to achieve the Agricultural Technician credential offered through the Florida Farm Bureau.

HONORS Credit for CTE Level 3 Courses
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Level III (3) courses are designed for students who have demonstrated an advanced level of interest and achievement in their CTE subject area. CTE Level 3 courses are more demanding and have requirements beyond those of standard CTE courses.
The aims of CTE level III courses are to promote:
  • Opportunities for advanced work.
  • Rigorous study of CTE content areas.
  • Practical application of knowledge and skills.
  • Transfer of knowledge and skills to work-based situations.
  • College and Career credit and readiness.

This program supports students' college and career readiness. Students are college and career ready when they have the knowledge, skills, and academic preparation needed to enroll and succeed in college credit-bearing courses within an associate or bachelor degree program without the need for remediation. Students need these same attributes and levels of achievement to enter and succeed in post-secondary workforce education or to enter a career path offering a living wage and future advancement.
